Newborn Session FAQ’S

When is the best time to book a newborn session?

The ideal time frame for newborn portraiture is within two weeks of life. Newborn sessions take place mornings and book up very quickly. I take on a limited number per month to ensure my clients have flexibility in dates and to minimize turnaround times for edited galleries.  It is recommended to book at least 3 to 4 months in advance of your due date.  If you have recently had your baby, don’t worry, you’re not too late! Please contact me as soon as possible and I can usually schedule you in.

What if my baby comes early or late?

I always leave a certain number of mornings free each month to accommodate changes in timing. I’ll be in touch close to your due date to check up on timing.  Please contact me as soon as your baby has arrived to finalize scheduling.

What if I plan on circumcising my newborn?

Please let me know if you plan on a circumcision because it is best to wait at least five days after for our session so baby can heal.  It is very important information for the comfort of your newborn.

Do I have to wear anything special or buy outfits and/or props for my baby?

If you would like portraits with your newborn, I suggest wearing a neutral color solid top or tank.  I also have maternity dresses and wraps available for client use.  You and your partner will only be photographed from the waist up with your baby.

You do not need to bring additional clothing or props for your baby unless you have something sentimental like a family heirloom.  Most store purchased items are too large for newborns and not used at our session.  The studio is stocked with handmade, custom sized props and accessories such as bonnets and headbands to use during your session.

I also keep the studio around 80 degrees to keep baby comfortable during the session, so I highly recommend dressing in layers.

How long will a newborn session last?

A typical newborn session takes between 2-3 hours to accommodate feedings, diaper changes, and transitioning between poses.

We just had our session and it was fabulous.  How long will it take to be able to see my gallery?

Because all images in client galleries are fully retouched and edited to showcase the images at their best, the average turnaround time from session to online gallery is about 2 weeks.

Can you come take photos in my home?

Of course! In-home sessions are more relaxed and I love being able to create authentic images of baby in her “natural environment.” We’ll most likely focus on areas of your home that have larger windows and soft, natural light.

Family Session FAQ’s

Where will my session take place?

We are surrounded by natural beauty right outside our doorsteps!  Some favorite spots of clients are Deception Pass, Bowman Bay, Washington Park, Cap Sante Marina and the Art Depot to name a few.  I am also willing to travel to Oak Harbor and Bellingham.

What time of day do outdoor sessions take place?

Outdoor sessions are typically only scheduled an hour to hour and a half before sunset as that is when the light is most flattering.  You can’t achieve beautiful backlighting when the sun is straight over head during the day.

What should we wear to our family session?

This is always the biggest concern and stressor when planning family photos.  Relax!  My suggestion is to be coordinating without matching perfectly.  Images are more visually interesting if everyone isn’t wearing matching black shirts and jeans.  Pinterest is a great source for ideas.  Start with mom’s outfit and work from there by choosing three complimentary colors.  Just remember to dress for the weather.

What should I bring?

If you have daughters, bring a hair brush and hair clips just in case it’s a windy day.  Bribery snacks are fine, but avoid Goldfish and other orange crackers that stick in teeth, chocolate that makes messes, and gummies that take a long time to chew.  Smarties are perfect.  I will provide a blanket to snuggle up on for sitting shots unless you have a particular one you’d like to bring with you.
